Synopsis:
When technology fulfills every dream, reality becomes a nightmare.

Below the streets of New State, the undergrounders fight to remain free of the technological control of the world above. Every night, Yara risks her life fighting New State’s deadliest weapons, the drones. Half human and half machine, their living half tortured until everything human is gone, the drones have only one objective. Kill. And they do it with exacting precision.

Yara is good at her job and committed to her raids on New State. Until one of those raids brings her face-to-face with Joshua, a New State citizen who doesn’t quite fit her preconceived expectations. After a couple of awkward encounters, he shows her the meaning of hooking up—a computer simulation that allows people to live out their fantasies—without the complication of emotional entanglements or physical reality. But what Yara feels for Joshua is very real. And it’s punishable by law.

As she and Joshua grow closer, she convinces him to leave New State for her underground cause. But as the unrest between New State and the underground escalates, and the drones move in to destroy her world, nothing goes as planned. Families are arrested, loyalties are strained, and Yara’s forced to choose between her people and her feelings. The wrong choice could mean the end of her people, and reality could slip away—forever...

I received this book from Red Moon Book Tours for the book tour, all reviews and opinions are my own.  If you would like to check out the rest of the blog tour click here for the official schedule.

I loved the concept of this book and the virtual reality part that people would do at night instead of dreaming. Though I think in order to keep your mind healthy it would have to be a mixture of the two but it really got me thinking. It brought up an in depth conversation between me and my boyfriend. Originally how the conversation started was about a CSI episode that we were watching and a old discussion that both me and him listened to (somewhere on the internet)  that was about people who liked little children but didn't want to act on those urges because they knew it was wrong but could not go get help anywhere for it basically without be turned in to be put on a list. The CSI episode that we were watching was about a Sub and Dom place that one of the girls that worked there ended up dead. Anyway we started an in depth conversation about how if we did have this kind of virtual reality thing that is talked about in this book would people still want to physically take out their urges or would the virtual reality be enough for most, or at least a safe way of dealing with it. So of course we went round and round with the debate talking about problems even beyond the two I just mentioned. I mean when I use a book to debate real problems I know it is a great book. I could see something like this happening, it already has basically we are all plugged into the internet and some children if they don't have it act like they will die without it. I am glad to say I grew up in a house hold that didn't really have video games I didn't even really get into them till my older teens even then it wasn't anything like my boyfriend who when I met him was obsessed with games. Anyway this is a review not a debate... though I would love it if anyone does want to discuss things with me, I might have to put up another blog post just on this discussion.

The pacing of the book was fast I liked that about this book since it kept things moving forward but I would have liked to know a little bit more about the world both the undergrounder one and the normal day to day life for Josh in the normal and virtual realities he lived in. I also liked in this one both the main characters got along with their parents. I don't find many books that follows that because usually everyone has problems with their parents in some way shape or form, but it is nice to read about when the parents get along with the kids and try to help rather than hinder.

Other than wanting to know more about the technology that is use like in one room when Yara was doing a recon mission she found people plugged into computers. I would like to know more about the why of that and what else goes on in this place. I loved this book and hope to see more within this world. Now here is an excerpt of how Yara and Josh first meet.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt:
“Hi,” he called out.
Yara’s heart hammered, and adrenaline coursed through her limbs. She turned to run.
“Wait,” the stranger whispered. “I won’t turn you in. I’m out here too.” He obviously didn’t realize that Yara was a rebel. He might not know it yet, but he would soon. Still, he didn’t sound dangerous. Maybe Yara could take care of him. She had never had to kill anyone totally human, but she had trained to do so. At this point, she didn’t think she would need to. The skinny boy didn’t look like a real threat, either.
She turned back toward him and attempted what she hoped was a look of death and destruction.
Instead of being scared, he smiled at her and brushed the hair out of his eyes. Even in the shadowy street, Yara could see the color was a beautiful emerald green. She had a hard time looking away, until his voice jarred her back to reality.
“I’m Joshua15111,” he said robotically. “What are you doing out here?”
“I could ask you the same thing.”
“Enjoying the night sky,” he replied, each word clipped and succinct. Unable to make prolonged eye contact, he looked toward the stars.
“Aren’t you supposed to be hooked up to an alternate universe, enjoying battle, boobs, or whatever perverted fantasy you want to conquer tonight?” Yara asked, and then instantly regretted her words.
“Hey, it’s not like that. You know how it is.” For the first time, his voice took on a more humanistic quality. He sounded peeved.
She grunted in response. She didn’t know anything of the sort.
Joshua15111 looked at her briefly, quizzically. “Wait, do you know that? Are you one of them? The rebels?”
Oh no. “What rebels?”
“Are you for real? Everyone knows about the rebels. You must be one. Are you a rebel? That’s so cool.”
Me and my big mouth. Fear finally overtook her. Vague ideas about running away from or fighting the stranger flitted by, but Yara’s feet felt like concrete blocks. She wasn’t even sure she’d be able to form a coherent sentence if he asked her something about the underground.
Review: Eeny Meeny (Book #1) by M.J. Arlidge
Genre: Thriller, Mystery
Publisher: NAL
Source: NetGalley
Synopsis:
Two people are abducted, imprisoned, and left with a gun. As hunger and thirst set in, only one walks away alive.
It’s a game more twisted than any Detective Helen Grace has ever seen. If she hadn’t spoken with the shattered survivors herself, she almost wouldn’t believe them.
Helen is familiar with the dark sides of human nature, including her own, but this case—with its seemingly random victims—has her baffled. But as more people go missing, nothing will be more terrifying than when it all starts making sense....
Review:
I received this book from NetGalley for an honest review, all reviews and opinions are my own.
I needed a good mystery and this hit the spot for me. I read some other reviews before looking to much farther into this book and many said if you liked the Saw movies then you would like this. I liked the first couple of Saw movies when  it actually but I think after the third one it went down from there. This book lived up to those first couple of Saw movies.
Helen Grace is a complex character and not to much is explained on her int his first book. She is a very hard woman and doesn't give into emotions easily. In the book there is a bit of Dominating that goes on but not much that makes a great impact I am hoping that is explained a bit more in the books to come as well. I'm pretty sure she uses it as a tool to help keep her emotions in check that or to help her think more clearly but I could be wrong and it is something else entirely.
The story itself is very fast paced and keeps the reader on their toes. Once you think you have it figured out it will turn you in a different direction. Some of the flashbacks helped give clues into where this story was headed but it still was an interesting conclusion and how it all came together.
Also is it just me or does it seem like Helen doesn't sleep at all. I swear she should be a walking zombie on her feet with how hard she was working. I know it just seems like that because the book was so fast paced but it seems like she had no down time what so ever. I am excited to see where Helen ends up and if she deals with her emotional and past problems.
June Wrap-Up
Ink and Bone by Rachel Caine
Rating -
This is the first book of The Great Library series. You can see a more in depth review here. Review But the basic idea I think what it comes down to in this alternate world is e-books vs. physical books.
Destroy Me by Tahereh Mafi
Rating -
This is a short story and is in between book one and two, it is also told from Warner's point of view. Ok I admit I hate Warner after the first book and didn't think he was redeemable at all and would never be in my eyes. We do get to see things from his point of view and I can see what he is thinking and what not but now even after this one I wasn't convinced why everyone was all ooooo Warner.
This is the first book in the Penryn and the End of Days trilogy. I loved this book and couldn't believe how long I took to finally get to this series! I have the second book and can't wait to continue on with the series. If you would like to read a longer review here it is. Review
Mercy Thompson: Hopcross Jilly by Patricia Briggs
Rating -
This is a graphic novel and is a short story in between books seven and eight. I have been keeping up with the Mercy Thompson series and when I saw this on NetGalley I had to read it and see how the characters were depicted and drawn. I have one of the  other Graphic novels from this series but have not picked it up yet, I will have to soon because I just need some more of this series while waiting for the next book. A longer review is here. Review
Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi
Rating -
This is the second book in the Shatter Me trilogy. As I stated above I wasn't really feeling the Warner love but neither was I feeling the Adam love anymore. He just got annoying and her along with him. Warner did redeem himself a little bit especially toward the end. So I think I can see why everyone is so in love with him. I mean yea I get it you have a deathly touch and oh poor me I have no one to love or touch me but come on get up in do something about it. Which finally she does at the end of the book so I am really excited to read the next and final book and hopefully she is more kick ass.
Survive the Night by Danielle Vega
Rating -
This is a standalone novel. I wrote a longer review here if you would like to check it out. Review But basically this is the myth about the alligator in the sewer mixed with some sort of sea monster on steroids. Very entertaining and did keep me intrigued and questioning things to the end but not the best ending since I was as a whole looking for a different kind of ending one that maybe didn't have a sea monster but still good.
Cold Burn of Magic by Jennifer Estep
Rating -
This is the first book in the series Black Blade.  Now I had to read this because I am just getting into her Spider assassin series and I thought since she is starting a new series I would start that one as well. I mean I was enjoying the other one I think I would like this one as well and I was right I did enjoy it. It did have a lot of similarities with her other series but it still was intriguing lots of mystery through out. I  longer review is here. Review
Forever by Maggie Stiefvater
Rating -
This is the third and final book of the The Wolves of Mercy Falls trilogy though there is a spin off of a fourth book that I most likely will read some time soon. Finally I am done with this trilogy!!! Oh wait now I still have the fourth spin-off book. To me this last book did not feel like a last book should feel. Nothing was solved other than they moved the wolves to safety whoopie! That is why I think the fourth book was put in and hopefully will have a more satisfying ending. Its also not in a Grace and Sam point of view so I hear so I am happy about that. Their happy sadness was just to depressing to read about some times.
Panic by Lauren Oliver
Rating -
This is a standalone novel.  This is not the usual book I typically read obviously, I usually stay away from contemporary unless if it hooks me in, and this one did just that. I liked the idea of people playing a game at the end of the year as a senior to win all this money and be able  to get out of the small town and do whatever they want. This book teaches you that money is only half of the problem most of the time. Yea more money can get you far but you can only go so far with your problems still following you. One can be a whole lot happier in a small no place like where they lived if they just work on themselves. I like the thought of the game also kind of facing your fears. Now in days many people have way to many fears that stop them from living life or doing things in general we need to surpass that and learn to over come our fears.
Update:
I am back, sorry it took so long for me to get situated enough to get back in the groove of things. I am still not all there but at least I have the job thingy settled so that will give me more time to get things done. I hope to also start making youtube videos again but that might have to be put off for another month or two since I am still not all the way unpacked. There are just too many things to do and not enough free time to do them. I feel like I am so behind on so many things but I think I am doing okay regardless of having lots of stuff thrown at me. Oh the joys of moving!
I am also sorry that I have only been writing reviews on here that is all I have had time for lately but like I said I am hoping to get back into the normal groove of things so you will be seeing more fun things along with the reviews. I hope everyone had a great fourth of July if you celebrate. If not I hope you had a great day regardless. I know I did, didn't get to go swimming like I wanted but played tennis instead which I haven't done in years due to lack of out door courts. I love getting to do stuff outside now since it is so nice and hot outside. I plan to get my book all in order hopefully by the end of this month and possibly go through some more boxes but we will see.
Hope everyone is having a good time!
