Review:
I received this book from YA Bound Book Tours for the blog tour, all reviews and opinions are my own.

This was a very interesting read. At first from the blurb I thought this was going to be an angel kind of book where she isn't fallen but is reborn for doing something wrong, but this was very different from what I thought it was going to be. I was surprised and after reading the first few chapters I was hooked in and couldn't put it down. There are other worlds through out this book and I hope when I continue on to book two that we get to see even more of these other worlds other than the ones we come across in the first one.

The world building for these other worlds had a lot of description, and I could easily picture each world. The only thing I wished there was more information on is where Lena is originally from that world is still a bit confusing to me especially the rules that are supposed to be followed and what not. I am guessing though more information will be provided in the next books.

I liked Lena's character though coming from an abusive home I expected her to maybe have some more issues. Though she does run to get away from it all, to kind of free herself so that could be seen as a coping mechanism for her home life. I was so happy that Lena didn't just accept everything that was told to her, even though she has had dreams of Tarek she doesn't instantly fall in love with him. Which was a relief that is one of the main problems with reborn people in books or at least ones that I have read.  I also liked at the beginning where Lena watches a scary movie to kind of scare herself but also to overcome that fear. That reminded me a lot of what I do and why I love scary movies so much. This is definitely a book about overcoming your fears and facing them head on.

Overall I really enjoyed this book and want to continue one with the series. This first book did leave off on a bit of a cliff hanger and I am wondering what will happen in book two because of it. Lena is a strong character and she is determined to hold on to her current life and live it to the fullest but of course there is Tarek and he isn't going to make that easy for her.

If you would like to pre-order book two in the Energy series, Lost Energy you can go here to order: Amazon. The second book will be coming out in early February. Broken Skies (Book #1) by Theresa Kay

Genre: Young Adult, Science Fiction, Dystopian
Published: January 13, 2015
Publisher: Skyscape
Pages: 372

Source: Netgalley
Synopsis:
Thirty years ago, civilization collapsed. Few survived.
Ten years ago, the aliens arrived…and stayed.
One year ago, I killed two men and went a little crazy.
Today, the aliens took my brother and I will do anything to get him back.

In seventeen-year-old Jax Mitchell's world, humans are nearly extinct and alien settlers have arrived.

Until recently, the E’rikon have remained segregated in their city and ignored the few humans who have tried to engage them… but now they have taken Jax’s brother. To rescue him, she forms an uneasy alliance with a teenage E’rikon left stranded in the woods. She agrees to guide him to the city if he sneaks her past the human-proof barrier. Too bad it’s not that simple.

Jax, who cannot stand to be touched, finds that she’s drawn to the alien boy with bright green hair and jewel-like scales down his back. And he’s equally affected by her, the courageous redhead with haunted eyes. But she doesn’t know the alien’s true motives and he has no idea that she is much more than she seems.

In this world where alien and human are at odds, the connection forming between the two has consequences. What started off as a rescue mission sets a chain of events in motion which threatens not only the remaining humans and the growing alien society, but Earth itself.

Review:
I recieved this book from NetGalley for an honest review, all reviews and opinions are my own.

I was hooked into this book from page one all the way up until then end, and now I can't wait for the next one to be out. Jax the main character has been through a lot, and is a little mentally unstable because of it. I personally can really connect to this kind of character since I have been through a similar situation, and I loved that even though she was constantly pushed into uncomfortable situations she would still push through for her brother. Jax's character is very real and believable throughout the story; she has issues with people being close to her and anxiety and it is portrayed very well. But she doesn't use these things as a crutch, she works through it and any person that deals with anxiety or a past problem can tell you sometimes little tricks like the ones Jax uses are needed to get by.The cover also reflects Jax perfectly this is exactly how I pictured her in my mind.

The only downside is that there isn't much known about these aliens that have been here for ten years. One would think that someone would know something. A little is told about the world but still most of the aliens world is up in the air and not explained. I am hoping there is more about the alien's city and maybe even where they come from in the second book. Even with all that information left out it was still a very good read and I understand you can only fit so much information into one book at a time. There was a lot going on in just this one book many surprising twists I didn't see coming.

I also loved Jax's name as well as Lir's. Talking about Lir, a guy with green/golden hair I could get on board with someone like that. My favorite color is green so I was already hooked and then as I kept reading and learning more about Lir I just fell for him. He is very sweet and caring even when some things go wrong he is always willing to appologize and admit he is wrong. I know a few men who could learn from this character.

I liked how this has a different feel to it than some of the other science fiction books that I have read. In this book the aliens aren't hiding or blending in with the population and they didn't come to earth to start a war, or most of them didn't not at first. This is a very unique read and I am excited and can't wait for the next book in the series.

You can also find this list will updated periodically on goodreads here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/2103988-2015-challenges
I also have some other challenges on there as well, but mostly its about finishing some series that have been sitting on my shelves for a while. I also am going to finish the two books that I have had sitting on my currently reading list for a while which is Outlander and the Aesop Fables. Also starting February I believe I will be picking out of my TBR bag again and making myself read books off my shelves that I wouldn't necessarily pick.

And of course my main goal is just to have fun! I have a busy year ahead of me with possibly moving and living in a new state and what not so if I don't complete all my goals that is okay.

Writing goals I plan to finish two books possibly by the end of the year. I also plan on writing more every month instead of just saving it all for Camp NaNoWriMo and NaNoWriMo.

Blog goals I plan to write at least three or four reviews a month as well as other posts such as tags, life travels, and other things going on in my life or with writing. I want to do monthly wrap-ups still as well I know I missed December it was sort of a bad month for me but this is a new year and good things for the future hopefully. I also want to leave more comments on friends blogs that I visit a lot and of course keep talking to everyone who stops by here.

What are your goals for 2015?

Extra Book Excerpt:

The sound of metal clashing echoes through the air on deck. In the center of the ship Zane and
Taranis are sparring while the crew watches from a safe distance. Neither man seems to be
holding back. Skirting around the fighting men, I reach the stairs up to the helm and scale them.
Several pirates are leaning up against the railing overlooking the deck. When I appear they move
aside to make a space for me in the middle.

“How long have they been at it?” I ask the group of men.

“Half an hour or so,” a red-haired pirate replies. “You want in on the betting pool? It's not too
late.”

“I'll pass thanks.”

Only a moron would bet against Zane. Although I have to admit, it appears Taranis is putting up
a good fight. He rushes at Zane with a series of furious swings, which are all parried with ease.
When he leaps away, Zane charges him. Taranis manages to parry all but one swing. This one he
blocks with the large silver gauntlet on his left forearm. Zane takes a step back and lowers his
sword.

“Had enough yet, pirate?” he asks laughing.

Taranis is staring at him in cool silence, but his breathing is a bit labored. When the captain
rushes him, Zane drops to the ground and knocks him down with a leg sweep. Taranis sprawls on
the deck but doesn't lose his sword. Zane leaps to his feet and moves to place his sword at the
rogue's throat. Taranis manages to block the strike with his gauntlet before leaping back to his
feet.

“I guess not,” Zane observes.

Taranis gazes up at me with a leer and a wicked smirk. I don't even have time to gulp before he
vaults over the rail to seize me around the waist. My shriek is somewhere between a cry of
surprise and a laugh when Taranis pulls me against his side, pointing his sword at Zane.

“Drop your sword, mercenary,” he commands.

“Why would I do that?” Zane asks scowling. He's obviously not happy with the direction of the
fight. For my part, I lean against Taranis, trying hard not to laugh.

“I have your woman,” Taranis declares. “I'm sure you wouldn't want to see her harmed.”

“I know you won't hurt her, pirate,” Zane says, exasperation apparent in his eyes and his voice.

With a smirk, I glance up at the pirate's jubilant face. I have to agree with Zane. Taranis is as
harmless as a puppy.

“Now either get back down here or surrender,” Zane yells.

“What if I do this?” Taranis asks, pulling on my braid and baring my neck to him.

His lips start trailing feather light kisses up my neck. I'm too shocked to do anything but stand in
his embrace.

“Oh, that's it!” Zane shouts, running toward us. “You're a dead man!”

“Sorry, my gorgeous beauty,” Taranis says laughing, “gotta go!” He leaps off the railing just as
Zane reaches my side.

“Are you all right?” Zane asks, cupping my cheek. I try to keep it in but to no avail. My laughter
rings out, and I'm doubled over by the force of it. “I'll take that as a yes,” he mumbles before he
takes off running after Taranis. “You may as well surrender, pirate! Where are you going to run?
This is a ship!”

My Thoughts:
Just by this excerpt and synopsis alone it sounds like a good book. I can't wait to read this book and see where it leads. The cover is also absolutely stunning! Let me know if you plan on reading this series or if you have and let me know your thoughts down below.

  5. Best series you started in 2014? Best sequel of 2014? Best series ender of 2014? Cinder by Marissa Meyer. It's a toss up between Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas and Cress by Marissa Meyer for me . The Witch with No Name by Kim Harrison.
  6. Favorite new author you discovered in 2014? Jennifer Estep or Rick Riordan.
  7. Best book from a genre you don't typically read/was out of your comfort zone? I haven't ever really read a lot of science fiction so I read a couple this year and hope to read more in the future. The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey
  8. Most action-packed/thrilling/unputdownable book of the year? The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin
  9. Book you read in 2014 that you are most likely to re-read next year? Probably only The Undead Pool by Kim Harrison because of a year read a long I am doing with a group and my boyfriend. Maybe even a Witch with no Name as well.

  15. Favorite passage/quote from a book you read in 2014? “Asscrown," I muttered under my breath as I headed to my next class. I wasn't proud of swearing at a complete stranger, no. but he started it.

Noah matched my pace. "Don't you mean 'assclown'?" He looked amused.

"No," I said, louder this time. "I mean asscrown. The crown on top of the asshat that covers the asshole of the assclown. The very zenith in the hierarchy of asses," I said, as though I was reading from a dictionary of modern profanity.

"I guess you nailed me then.”
― Michelle HodkinThe Unbecoming of Mara Dyer
  16. Shortest and longest book you read in 2014?  Shortest: Poison (short story) by Jennifer Estep  Longest: City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare

  26. Book that mad you cry or nearly cry in 2014? Silver Shadows by Richelle Mead or If I Stay by Gayle Forman. The movie of If I stay definitely had me in tears it just hits home to something that I have wondered myself.
  27. Hidden Gem of the year? Illusion by Sherrilyn Kenyon
  28. Book that crushed your soul? Tempt the Stars by Karen Chance only because it leaves off on a major cliff hanger and the next book was supposed to already be out but it got pushed back. I need that next book.
  29. Most unique book you read in 2014? I think Reboot by Amy Tintera fits this category nicely because it kind of combines zombies and robots together and takes on a very unique story.
  30. Book that made you the most mad? Night Angel Trilogy by Brent Weeks only because in those books at least the first two, women are one of two things basically and can't have depth.

Your blogging/ bookish life

  6. Most popular post this year on your blog (whether it be by comments or views)? Waiting on Wednesday - Carnival of Lies by Melissa Marr
  7. Post you wish got a little more love? Probably some of my earlier posts from this year but I understand I just started this blog at the beginning of 2014 and didn't have that many people visiting but now it has a pretty good flow.
  8. Best bookish discovery (book related sites, book stores, etc.)? I love Goodreads and now use it like I would facebook and even more than facebook now.
  9. Did you complete any reaching challenges or goals that you had set for your self at the beginning of this year? I did complete the goodreads challenge I set for myself I wanted to read 100 books and surpassed that. That is the only real goal I had set for myself other than complete another NaNoWriMo and win which I also did.

Looking Ahead

  1. One book you didn't get to in 2014 but will be your number one priority in 2015? The Celestial Blues Trilogy by Vicki Pettersson. I have been meaning to get to her books for a while since Kim Harrison talks highly of her.
  2. Book you are most anticipating for 2015 (non-debut)? To many series to count! Saint Odd by Dean Koontz, The Ruby Circle by Richelle Mead, Firefight by Brandon Sanderson, and on and on.
  3. 2015 Debut you are most anticipating? I don't usually find out about debut novels from authors till I find them in the stores just because I have never heard of them before so I don't find them very easy. The only one I am really excited to buy when it comes out is Dove Arising by Karen Bao since I really enjoyed reading the ARC and know I will want to reread it and collect the series.
  4. Series ending/a sequel you are most anticipating in 2015? Bloodlines by Richelle Mead and Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz are both ending that I am highly anticipating. There are probably others but those two are high on my list.
  5. One thing you hope to accomplish or do in your reading/blogging life in 2015? I have many things I hope to accomplish, I want to post more things on my blog not just reviews though I do want to do about two or three reviews a month. I also want to read 125 books in 2015 as well as finish and catch up on some series that I have had sitting on my shelves as well  as start some series. I want to continue making more friends through my blog and on goodreads, people who share my love for books. I hope to possibly finish two novels in 2015 as well as win NaNoWriMo again. I have a busy year to come.
  6. A 2015 release you have already read and recommended to everyone? Dove Arising by Karen Bao

Do you have any plans for 2015? What were some of your favorite reads this year?
